The Norwegian Railway Directorate has national coordination and professional responsibility for aligning the railway sector, which requires clear and effective communication tools. To meet this need, we developed a design system that ensures a cohesive visual representation of data and information, with intuitive tools that make it easy for the client to use.

The Challenge

The Norwegian Railway Directorate needs to communicate varied and/or complex messages both internally and externally. It’s not just about sharing the data — it must be communicated in an understandable way to generate interest and insight.

Additionally, being a large organization requires a high degree of standardization so that people with varying levels of technical and visual skills can produce effective visualizations. The work was ultimately intended to empower employees to work strategically with storytelling.

Innsight Phase

We began by defining the client’s goals across departments and establishing a shared understanding of the task. This phase included analyzing existing materials and conducting interviews with employees to identify opportunities and challenges.

Design Phase

The key was to find the right balance between abstraction and detail. We achieved this by addressing (and solving) genuinely complex problems, which informed and challenged our design decisions along the way.

Implementation

The most important aspect during the implementation of the system was maintaining regular dialogue with key personnel at the Norwegian Railway Directorate to confirm or refute decisions along the way. This phase also included training in the design tool Figma, so that the deliverables could be used from day one.
